Program Overview

Practices - MANDATORY

  • Season begins Monday June 24

  • Mondays 5-7:30 – racing during NCYC Monday night racing series

  • Wednesdays 5-7pm: race team only – focus on skill building

General Race Team Details

  • Cost: 

    • $220 per sailor and includes coaching (practice and regatta day), race team shirt, and use of boats/equipment. 

    • Regatta fees are separate. Please see payment options for each race class.

    • 10% discount for sailors registered for at least 1 sailing session at NCYC. Contact Melissa Mason, NCYC Jr Sailing Chair, at masonahoy@gmail.com for discount code.

  • Parent Race Support: Parents are required to help transport boats and racers to/from regattas. When you register your racer, please indicate which regattas you can help with transportation on the registration form.

  • Race team size: Each race class has a minimum number of participants required. There is also a combined minimum of 6 racers across both race classes for the 2024 race season.

Opti Race Class Details

  • Skill level: Participants must have at least 2 years’ experience sailing Optis at NCYC or another club program.

  • Age: Must be at least 10 yrs old by June 1st.

  • Team size: Minimum of 3 Opti racers required to run the team; maximum team size of 8 Opti racers. 

  • 2024 Regattas (tentative):

    • Ram Island - Tuesday July 9th  

    • Watch Hill - Tuesday July 16th 

    • Niantic Bay - Thursday July 18th  

    • Paul Risseeuw Memorial Jr. Regatta (Pettipaug) - Sunday July 21st  

    • Mason’s Island - Tuesday July 30th 

  • Regatta Boat Assignments: 

    • Boats will be assigned by the Opti Race Coach OR

    • Racers may use their personal boats and equipment

  • Payment options:

    • All-inclusive: $420 ($220 race team fees + $200 for 5 regattas listed)

    • Race Team Fees only: $220 (sailor will register for each regatta independently)

  • Register by: May 31, 2024

Club 420 Race Class Details

  • Skill level: Participants must have at least 1 year of experience sailing Club 420s at NCYC or another club program.

  • Age: Must be at least 12 yrs old by June 1st.

  • Team size: Minimum of 6 Club 420 racers required to run this race class; maximum race class size of 12 racers. 

  • 2024 Regattas (tentative):

    • Paul Risseeuw Memorial Jr. Regatta (Pettipaug) – Sunday July 21st

    • Watch Hill – Thursday August 1st 

    • The Dinghy Race – August 9-10th

  • Regatta Boat Assignments: 

    • Boat selection will be determined by MNR participation and Wednesday practices. 

    • Race coach will assign skipper & crew assignments

  • Payment options:

    • Race Team Fees only: $220 (sailors will register/pay for each regatta independently)

  • Register by: May 31, 2024

2024 NCYC Junior Race Team

The NCYC junior race team is designed to provide participants with racing instruction including strategies and tactics and is geared towards sailors who want to learn to race or improve their racing skills. Sailors will receive personalized coaching from our NCYC race coaches. There is an Opti and a Club 420 race class.

Any sailor who participates in at least one sailing session at North Cove Yacht Club this summer will get a 10% discount on Race Team fees. Reach out to Melissa Mason, the Junior Sailing Chair, at masonahoy@gmail.com to get the discount code!
