The North Cove Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is designed to teach students at the beginner, advanced beginner, and intermediate sailing levels. Beginners are taught the fundamentals of sailing small boats and after a few years, students are coached how to compete at the regatta level.
We offer three, two week, all day sessions with twenty-four students each session. Students range in age from nine to fifteen years old.
In addition to the head instructor, we have three senior instructors teaching a total of one beginner class, one advanced beginner class, and one intermediate class. Our instructors are all Level 1 trained and certified by US Sailing and are also certified in CPR and First Aid.
Each session, we have three junior instructors who volunteer their time to assist with the program and in exchange, receive the opportunity to begin learning to teach. Another system of support are the Yacht Club members who volunteer their time each week to help the program sail smoothly during the summer season.
The North Cove Sailing Program sails Dyer Dinghies, Hunter 90s, JY-9s, Optimists, and 420s. Dyers, Hunter-90s, JY-9s, and Optimists have one sail while 420s have two sails and a spinnaker. The beginner sailors learn to sail Dyers, sailing with two students in a boat the first week and one student per boat the second week. The advanced beginners sail alone the entire camp session in either Dyers or Hunters, JY-9s, and Optimists. The intermediates focus on sailing the Hunter 90s, JY-9s, and Optimists at low tide and the 420s at high tide.
Please feel free to contact the head instructor with any questions about the program.
