We had eleven cruising canvas class boats cross the starting line for the Belle 8. Ed Godfrey and his committee set a perfect course with a good beat from the beach to a temporary buoy set to the south, a reach to Bell 2 off Cornfield and then off the wind to the finish. The first rounding at the temporary mark was challenging as the skippers dealt with a significant flood tide. The race party featured a computerized playback of the race using Mark and Chris Fortin’s “Kattack” software. While the racers enjoyed their BYO refreshments, Mark narrated the progress of the race played back at 10 times actual time. (Kattack software uses data from GPS units carried aboard each yacht, downloaded to a computer after the race, and projected on a screen for all to see.) Mark was able to highlight what the boats did well, and not so well.
