In conjunction with and following the spaghetti supper, member Garrett Keenan will present a program that he put together for libraries and schools on “Columbus -- What Did He Know?” The program is in response to some current and very popular (PBS special, etc.) theories that the Chinese first circumnavigated the globe in 1421 and that both Columbus and Magellan had Chinese-provided maps telling them where to go and how to get there.
It is a very colorful and visual program that will include discussions of: the controversy, the ships, the navigational charts of the times, the winds and currents of the Atlantic (based on NOAA satellite mapping), how he completely re-rigged the ships assigned to him for the voyage, where his route came from (many had tried – no one else had succeeded), mappings of prior exploratory voyages (that set the scene for Columbus), and a little sex and intrigue (Did Queen Isabella bear Columbus’ second son? What else did Columbus have to hide?)
