The 2010 NCYC Summer Cruise got off to a great start when 48 NCYC members and guests met on Saturday afternoon at Coecles Harbor Marina for a Poker Run, followed by awards and a barbeque. Sunday was a lay day, spent kayaking, clamming (practically no luck), and shopping in Greenport. In the afternoon the cruisers met at Taylors Island for cocktails, and to tour the cabin and learn the history of the property from a representative of the Taylor’s Island Foundation. Before departing Taylor’s Island, the skippers discussed and agreed on the course for the first leg of the Tigress Trophy race.
On Monday morning most of the cruisers departed for West Neck, circumnavigating Shelter Island in a counter-clockwise direction. A fresh breeze from the SE ensured a good workout for the crews – Capella counted 17 tacks to get past Greenport to Jennings Point! At West Neck the crews were allowed to relax , swim, socialize, and gather on the beach for cocktails. Tuesday was a short run to Sag Harbor. Many of the boats went early to take advantage of the amenities in town and ended up motoring due to light winds and a foul current, but Ladybug’s captain bribed the crew to stay on the hook until the afternoon, thereby taking advantage of both the building wind and the favorable current to rack up Tigress points. All the crews enjoyed showers, sight-seeing, shopping, and a nice night out on the town in Sag.

Wednesday most of the captains took their lesson from Ladybug and decided there was no rush to get underway while waiting for the current to turn favorable for the run to Three Mile Harbor. It turned out to be another fantastic day of sailing in a fresh breeze, although the breeze was once again on the nose. Three Mile Harbor was calm as the crews gathered on the beach for the afternoon activity – a sand castle contest sponsored by the crew of Renaissance. Each participant had been instructed to bring one implement or decorative object. The group was split into five teams and given one hour to create their masterpiece – and create they did! The resulting works of art included a vision for the waterfront and grounds of North Cove Yacht Club, Moby Dick fending off Captain Ahab, a life size alligator crawling up the beach, a fanciful castle, and a supine mermaid complete with seagrass hair and a shell bikini. The judges carefully considered all the entries before finally declaring the alligator – from Team David – the winner!
Thursday morning once again the racers took their time departing to wait for the current; and in the meantime several dinghy-loads visited the local beaches and successfully located three geocaches. The race to Montauk got underway around mid day in a strong breeze - again often on the nose – but what a blast! No one admitted to getting stuck going into Montauk Lake, although next time I’ll remember that those marks just past the docks that look like the entrance into a small cove are actually marking a jog in the channel. Thursday evening crews went in several directions, including one group that crossed the lake to Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Café – hey, with a name like that you can pretty much guess what the food will be like!
Friday morning a group of about 20 hopped (filled) the local bus to take in the sights at Montauk Lighthouse. We had a gorgeous day and could see as far as Block Island and the CT and RI coastlines from the top of the lighthouse and tour the lighthouse museum at the old keepers quarters. The return bus trip took us into Montauk Village where groups split off and enjoyed shopping and dining. Friday evening we tested Ladybug’s total load carrying capacity while she hosted our evening happy hour gathering and we all enjoyed having one more opportunity to enjoy each other’s company as the first week of the cruise came to an end.

Friday Capella and Nepenthe finally got to take advantage of the continuing strong easterlies and sailed back to Old Saybrook on one tack. Most of the other boats stayed at Montauk to check out the area, and many went on to Block on Saturday. At that point the cruisers broke off into smaller groups with some sailing on to Cuttyhunk and Vineyard, some to Narragansett Bay, some returning home and some just relaxing in Block. (“To each his own”, -Cicero) In summary, this was a cruise that will be remembered for great NCYC participation, ideal sailing conditions (short legs and good wind) as well as the usual camaraderie and relaxation. It doesn’t get much better.
